Blunting the Spike: the CV Minimum Period
نویسندگان
چکیده
The standard picture of CV secular evolution predicts a spike in the CV distribution near the observed short–period cutoff P0 ≃ 78 min, which is not observed. We show that an intrinsic spread in minimum (‘bounce’) periods Pb resulting from a genuine difference in some parameter controlling the evolution can remove the spike without smearing the sharpness of the cutoff. The most probable second parameter is different admixtures of magnetic stellar wind braking (at up to 5 times the GR rate) in a small tail of systems, perhaps implying that the donor magnetic field strength at formation is a second parameter specifying CV evolution. We suggest that magnetic braking resumes below the gap with a wide range, being well below the GR rate in most CVs, but significantly above it in a small tail.

The minimum period problem in cataclysmic variables
We investigate if consequential angular momentum losses (CAML) or an intrinsic deformation of the donor star in CVs could increase the CV bounce period from the canonical theoretical value ∼ 65 min to the observed value P min ≈ 77 min, and if a variation of these effects in a CV population could wash out the theoretically predicted accumulation of systems near the minimum period (the period spi...

An experiment was conducted to investigate the genetic diversity in the cultivars and F1 hybrids of durum wheat, using agronomic and morphological traits. Evaluation of consistency between choosing parents of crosses based on morphological and agronomic observations and genetic distance obtained from cluster analysis were objectives of this study. Fourty- two genotypes were evaluated using a ra...
متن کاملBrown Dwarfs and the Cataclysmic Variable Period Minimum 3
Using improved, up–to–date stellar input physics tested against observations of low– mass stars and brown dwarfs we calculate the secular evolution of low–mass donor cat-aclysmic variables (CVs), including those which form with a brown dwarf donor. Our models confirm the mismatch between the calculated minimum period (P min ≃ 70 min) and the observed short–period cut–off (≃ 80 min) in the CV pe...

متن کاملMeasurement of variability dynamics in cortical spike trains.
We propose a method for the time-resolved joint analysis of two related aspects of single neuron variability, the spiking irregularity measured by the squared coefficient of variation (CV(2)) of the ISIs and the trial-by-trial variability of the spike count measured by the Fano factor (FF). We provide a calibration of both estimators using the theory of renewal processes, and verify it for spik...
